My Message on the “Bright Run” Wall of Hope, 9/10/11

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

The last few months, since about the second week of March when I found a very large lump in my breast, have been a blur.

It happened right after attending a professionally exhilarating Catersource 2011 Conference and Trade Show where I enjoyed presenting as a panelist speaker and judging in several prestigious categories at the International Caterers’ Associations’ “CATIE AWARDS” gala.

So, after a great week of education, networking and inspiration, I was pumped and ready to make some changes. I HAD NO IDEA!!

I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer on April 8, 2011. My mother was in Las Vegas on April 11th and the “Amazing Race” was on for tests and more tests. As we met with doctors under my insurance plan and then doctors I really wanted who were not, I got the whole scary picture of what I was up against and I was more afraid of the costs than the disease!

Still being a citizen of Canada, my husband, my parents and I made the very hard but wise decision that only I would return to do all my treatments in my home town at the amazing Juravinski Cancer Center in Hamilton, Ontario with an incredible health team. I returned to Canada just before Easter and began chemotherapy immediately which was completed in August. I am so blessed to have come through that ordeal with great results and, not too worse for the wear, thank G-d.

I write this post on the eve of my surgery. Radiation to follow and then another IV drug treatment for a year after (that would be $100K alone in the USA but covered in FULL in Canada)!

I won’t get into THAT argument here now or anytime, but I will say that, for financial and logistical reasons, “coming home” to enjoy the benefits of Canadian citizenship was the best decision I ever made for my survival and well being.

I will be here in Canada for an extended period of time and taking an extended leave of absence from my business and from planning weddings and events in Las Vegas. I’m taking one step and day at a time and I know that I will be a SURVIVOR!

One thing I will make an argument for is this; LOSE THE WEIGHT (if you have to) or maintain a healthy one, exercise, go to the doctor, get MAMMOGRAMS or other important medical tests when (if) you are due. TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF because you only have this one life and this one body to live it in. I know that sounds hokey. Oh well, it’s true! If my story can be of service to anyone, it is that I would have never found the lump if I had not lost the weight!! Losing weight SAVED MY LIFE! I reversed the self-imposed curse of Type 2 onset Diabetes and, in the nick of time, gave myself a shot at hopefully many more years to enjoy life with those I love and do great things for others in whatever way I may choose in the event world or beyond that.

To ALL the venues, creative wedding partners and my wedding planner colleagues who are doing an amazing job of stepping up to take over the weddings that I could not continue planning this year; Jeannie Ward of Wedding Jeannie and Veronica Medrano of Summit Events Catering in California, Juliet Douglas, Angelica McDonnell of Green Orchid Events and Dennis Silknitter at the Four Seasons Resort, Las Vegas….THANK YOU!

To Danielle and Terry, Theresa and Dave, Allison and Ron, Natalia and Rhett; being part of planning your weddings this year was/is a great thrill and honor. Although I couldn’t be there for you in person, I was and will be celebrating every moment with you on your day and thrilled for you! I know you will make every moment count and I WANT PICTURES!!

Please contact my Las Vegas Wedding Planning colleagues if you are looking for assistance in planning your wedding celebration. Whomever you choose from this list, you will be well taken care of by all wonderfully talented, passionate, professional, creative and professional women I am proud to call my friends.

Elizabeth Taylor in "Father of the Bride" 1950

Today, legendary screen actress Elizabeth Taylor passed away.

The world is just a little bit sadder and less beautiful with her gone.

Today remembering a truly gorgeous woman, inside and out who was a living ICON and loved for being so many things to so many people.

Oscar Winning Actress, Screen Siren, Wife (many times), Mother, Humanitarian who was one of the first to take up the cause for HIV/AIDS, style setter, savvy business woman and SURVIVOR on so many levels.

On the silver screen her whole life she blossomed from pretty girl, to radiantly stunning young lady as the original “Annie Banks” in 1950′s Father of the Bride to Gorgeous object of desire. Like the “White Diamonds” she personified in her perfume, Elizabeth truly was a diamond in every sense. Raw beauty, passion and fire taken from the earth, burnished and polished by life into a gem of a human being that sparked and radiated brilliant, intense love for every one and everything she loved.

Through sickness, health, divorce, marriage (repeat, repeat), thickness and thin. . . through it all, her heart and soul were the most beautiful of all.

What a Lady! What a Life!

Elizabeth Taylor truly lived her life “Celebrating Love and Life with STYLE Today and Everyday”.

Vintage & Whimsical? Yes. Timeless? Photo Credit: Unknown from www.wedinator.com

OR…

Timeless | Image by WriteShot

Despite the fact I created an “Inspiration to Reality” photo shoot for Style Me Pretty last year with some 30′s Return to Desert Glamor “vintage” elements and style, no old typewriters were harmed in the process!! Likewise no bride or groom lost their heads or their wedding shoes and were forced to wear precious rubber boots and hold a red balloon.

Although the venue and images looked vintage (thanks to the ingenious creativity of Chelsea and Jayse of Chelsea Nicole Photography), it was deliberately done from inspiration board WE CHOSE and “back story” based on the movie “The Aviator”. The shoot style and story also allowed us to showcase a unique venue, Springs Preserve, most Las Vegas visitors might overlook for weddings.

It was a fun challenge for me and all my creative partners channeling and bringing that “timeless” era’s moment to life. We certainly weren’t the first but I hope the trend doesn’t last because I do believe this “vintage” moment has had it’s share of enough moments in the sun (see top picture for proof). Oh, and the same goes for you too “Rustic Chic” and “Woodsy Whimsical”.

I know it’s not just me.

Many of my planner and wedding professional colleagues are perplexed this “trend” has lasted as long as it has. In a bride’s over-exerted effort to achieve these looks, the images become “dated”, not “timeless” as they had hoped for.

Read my photographer friends, Natasha and Chris from WriteShot Photography Blog who shared their own take on this very topic. We talk about this very subject CONSTANTLY.

Brides, you can only know what you see and is “fed” to you as you, newly engaged, venture out into the information-overloaded world of weddings in print, websites and blogs, blogs, BLOGS. (I don’t know why, but I have an image of The Grinch being bombarded with red balloons right now).

What you, me, the wedding industry is over-exposed to are over-used, safe trends many unimaginative bloggers with their own style agendas perpetuate. That is fine for them. It’s their blog to showcase whatever they like but are you really being inspired to express YOUR style by what’s out there?

To my Diary reading brides, colleagues and interested readers, I would like to think that those of you attracted to this blog crave to discover something new. Or, more importantly, desire permission to really be authentic to who you are and not be afraid to tell YOUR STORY! Do you know even where and how to begin?

As a wedding planner, and this goes for other wedding creative professionals too-including photographers, I believe to stay relevant, we need to find our own courage and self-confidence in our abilities and talents to help our clients find their self-confidence. To help guide them to create a celebration about what’s really in their hearts and not follow the crowd just because “the popular kids are all doing the latest thing”.

It’s why they seek us out isn’t it?

In retrospect, I bet if asked, most couples who followed some of these trends would look at their pictures and wonder “who are those people and why are they wearing our wedding clothes?” As a matter of fact, I recently heard a story from a friend of a colleague that complained about how upset they were with their images one year later. Not because they were of poor quality as they had “one of the top photographers”, but because they didn’t look like themselves in the pictures.

And if you will allow me to pose another “hmmmm” question? With the wedding industry still preaching the importance of “personalizing your wedding”, why are you settling to have your wedding and wedding images look like they belong to everyone else?

This is why I enjoy watching David Tuteras show, My Fair Wedding. Whether you can love it or leave the show, I personally find it compelling to watch. The brides on his show have some CRAZY THEME ideas to be sure and he doesn’t hide the fact that he thinks some are off their rocker. BUT, he finds a way to honor their essence and brings THEIR stories to life in ways they couldn’t even imagine with his unique flair. I have seen a “Monopoly Bride”, a “Mini-Truck Bride and even a “Swamp Bride”. I did not see one headless, galosh wearing, sepia-bleached, balloon holding couple all season .

So, to my brides, readers and colleagues, be brave, be true, be timeless in your own way…BE YOU!

I would love to hear your comments from both brides and wedding professionals. Are you swept up in the trend or staying true to your story? Any challenges?

Celebrating The Enduring Power of Love

Thursday, February 17th, 2011

Tracey and Mr. Moore | Image by: Artistic Imaging

Your Las Vegas Wedding Concierge and my husband are celebrating 10, YES 10 years of marriage today!!

I must say that I am humbled by this because, lets face it, facing life in these interesting times is not easy!

But, when we find a partner in life that we want to have by our side to face “all that life” out there, it sure makes it more fun. Ok, I admit I could insert many more colorful adjectives here too.

But that’s the point. No matter what has come our way, no matter how we have changed and grown as a couple and individually, the love we celebrated fresh and new 10 years ago still remains and endures. Is it always filled with passion and always fabulous? NO! BUT there is a deep sense of peace in knowing that, with all we have been through, “For better, for worse, in sickness and in health”, we are still deeply in love, respect each other and hope to enjoy many more milestones together.

When my parents celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 2007. I reflected on this in a post. My husband’s parents were married for close to 75 years. Entire lifetimes!

A Wedding, at it’s heart, is the event that celebrates “the marriage.” That is what all the flowers, all the food, all the entertainment, cake and that “perfect” gown is prepared and planned for; “The Wedding”, not “the marriage”. Without the marriage, it’s just a big party.

That is what we all come together for. Hearing our sister, brother, son, daughter, grandchild, niece, nephew and friends say these vows elevates and transforms us, as part of and witness to this marriage ritual, to a shared state of joy and happiness with the bride and groom. Our shared hope and faith in the power of lasting, enduring love is palpable; filled with energy. No wonder we want to rejoice and have fun! Nothing could be more wonderful in life than a newlywed couple and their families sharing their joy with loved ones in beautiful celebration with delicious food, drink and music!

But…you can’t have a wedding without a marriage. However, you can certainly have a marriage without a wedding. The couple who seal their vows with a ring in front of only a judge as witness share the same odds of experiencing long lasting, enduring love as the couple who celebrates the same ritual with 250 guests and a half-million dollar wedding budget.

I’m not “dissing” the wedding business here, lets be clear! I LOVE experiencing them and planning them. I am just being honest about what is ultimately important.

I remember what the Rabbi who married my husband said after reading aloud the Jewish marriage document, the “ketubah”. “This document is a reminder of how to treat one another as man and wife. Put it in a prominent place in your home so you can look at it every day. Read it aloud with glad hearts every year on your anniversary to fully understand and remember your covenant to each other, to celebrate and thank G-d for blessing and sustaining you and allowing you to see this day together.” Pretty powerful if you ask me.

And I hope to do this very thing today with my husband of ten years. Our story has been one of overcoming challenges to be together from the beginning. Love and perseverance on both our parts made it a reality. Today, my love, we celebrate that love and perseverance and the next 10 years with hopeful and joyous hearts because we are facing it together.

My darling, HAPPY ANNIVERSARY! “I LOVE YOU ALL WAYS, FOR ALWAYS”

Your wife,

Tracey

Labor of Love: Brand New Website to Launch this Week!

Monday, February 14th, 2011

New Las Vegas Wedding Concierge Website

How fitting that my gorgeous new website will be launching during this love filled week? Very! Because this has truly been a LABOR of LOVE!

Your Las Vegas Wedding Concierge has been at work on creating my new website for almost 7 months (almost as much to create a human life). It is finally finished and ready to make it’s debut in the next 24 to 48 hours and I can’t wait for you all to see it.

The new site completes the transformed Las Vegas Wedding Concierge brand that began it’s journey last year with “Creating Stylish Celebrations of Love and Life” and Celebrating Everyday with LOVE, LIFE & STYLE!

Your Las Vegas Wedding Concierge believes that weddings are celebrations of family and of the two of you. What I love most about the wedding day itself, after the planning is all said and done, is watching my couples surrounded by all the special touches they have created for all those they love who are surrounding them at that moment in time.

Marriage celebrates the transforming power of love and EVERYONE who is fortunate to witness and participate in this celebration are collectively and individually transformed by LOVE.

The new website is filled with words and images that embrace my belief and philosophy about what weddings mean to me and the value I place on planning this day with you; responsibly and with love in our hearts.

I am so proud of it and I hope you will love it as much as I do and that you will visit and return often.

Celebrating Love, Life (and the countdown to the new website) and Style Today and Everyday,

Tracey

GOOD GRACIOUS EVENTS presents “THE LOVE MARTINI”.

Dan Smith, GGE’s Creative Director and Mixologist stirs up the “THE LOVE Martini” Recipe for you.

The "LOVE Martini" by Good Gracious Events"

I actually had found a recipe years ago on a wine website for the same inspiration; taking fresh, whole, hulled strawberries (raspberries work well too) and tossing them in fine balsamic syrup with black pepper. When I tried it, it was a taste revelation that I still enjoy to this day. Layer the strawberries over a decadent quality of vanilla bean ice cream and enjoy. The “Love Martini” is, in essence, this recipe in a glass (with the extra benefit of alcohol of course!)
